My Dad told me a story some time back about some PETA activists who decided to protest an annual gopher shoot in South Dakota. The local nightly news offered them an opportunity to urge others to join them in the protest the night before the event. However, the next morning the zeal of the half dozen protestors dampened as score after score of shooters exited their vehicles and started loading their weapons of choice in what was an extremely well attended event that year. I understand that the PETArists left the scene before a shot was fired.
Understand that the protestors were in no danger of getting shot unless they had donned gopher costumes and started popping out of burrows. Rather, this was a show of solidarity by the people, for the people.
My son Stumbled Upon a blog post on MADMIKESAMERICA about an event that I somehow missed. Apparently the Westboro Baptist Church (yes, those wackos from Kansas) had gathered to protest at the funeral for a local fallen Marine Staff Sergeant in Brandon, Mississippi. I admit that living in Tennessee I do occasionally give Mississippians a hard time, but I have to give it to the Bros and Sisters in Mississippi for neutralizing this protest. I only wish I could have been there. It is a tale about people standing together in an America where people understand what makes this country great.
Brandon, Mississippi, this Bro's for you!
