Speech 101

Someone should tell Senator Reid that the arrangement and choice of words in a sentence can crucially tip meaning one or the other. In this particular clipped, it seem to have tipped it toward "other."

The context, from the senator who led the latest passage of job bills designed to create/save a million jobs:

It is hard for me to view a loss of only 36,000 as a victory. It is a statistical wash, in that the 9.7% jobless rate did not change. However, how do we call that an improvement? At the end of the day, a net loss is a net loss. If jobs were being dreated, vis a vis the stimulus, it seems we should see some positive movement in the bottom line numbers.

Were I part of that 36,000 number, I don't think I would have much to cheer about.

Losing 36,000 is not a victory, but it's a lot better than what could have been. If you want to call out someone whose recent actions and statements demonstrate obliviousness about the jobs situation, I nominate Jim Bunning,

My partner has been unemployed going on 2 years now and is losing benefits. The unemployment rate in RI as of Dec. 2009 is 12.2%. THERE ARE NO JOBS. I'm not happy that the unemployment rate here is 12.2%, but I'm happy that it's not 14 or 15% because then I'd probably be unemployed too.
