- Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio spent a little over $24,000 on catering costs. You know, just a little over.
- Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland cha-chinged about $1,500 on bottled water. Excessive self-aggrandizement can definitely make one's throat dry.
- The Speaker herself spent nearly $3,000 on flowers, $30,000 on food and beverage, and $2,700 on bottled water. When asked about the food charges, Ms. Pelosi said she had lunch catered from the CIA commissary and they lied about how much it was actually going to cost.

Fiscal Responsibility. Sort of.
Politico has an article today about expenditures of tax payer money by members of the House. It is enlightening, to say the least. Among some of the highlights:

Nancy buyed, the CIA lied.
I have a novel idea, put all legislators on a budget. If they feel the need to go over that budget, they can get another job or pay for it out of their own salary.
I just wish someone would explain to me why we continue to allow this nonsense. I paid for my lunch last night, and I have nowhere near the personal resources the legislator's have. Just this last summer I was at the Hart and Rayburn office buildings. They both had running water. Bottled water, how about a drinking fountain.
I was in DC with a small group of young people. It took no less than 30 staffers to get everything right for a couple of pictures with our elected officials...with one exception. John Thune walked up and said, "Hi I'm John, and welcome to your city."! The thing is we saw this "mob" of staffers scene repeated many times.
Inouye was walking through the tunnel from the Hart to the Senate. He was headed the opposite direction we were, and it took a good minute to fully walk past his pile of people following him.
Would seem to me that we are flushing lots of money down the drain with staff that "caters" to every need.
Again, John Thune took his own phone calls (2 of them while I was there) and had a pad of paper in his jacket pocket. I saw him write on it up against one of the pillers in the lobby of the Hart.
John is the guy that makes me think I'm getting a good value for my money.

I think our elected officials are so completely removed from reality, that when they get voted out they'll end up crazy billionaires like Norbel Fockwot...( I mean Al Gore!) I can't comprehend the amounts of money they pay for stuff!! I think they should all get $40,000. a year, 4 weeks vacation,2 sick days, and a bus pass! - Ted -
